My April Hero of the Month is someone I did not have to look very far at all to find. I just had to be willing to listen and pay attention. As for my hero, her name is Helena Kirk. She is eight years old. And she is a cancer survivor.

My March Hero of the Month is author Anne Rice. It is not for her books, though I do love them (the ones I’ve read) and though I know that they entertain and inspire many. It is rather for the way she quietly and gracefully wields the power that is celebrity through the tool that is social media.

My February Hero of the Month is someone who did have a life, mostly due to his own courage and efforts. But it was far too short, and there were still many accomplishments which, had he lived long enough, he would have surely accomplished with that stellar, infectiously positive mindset of his. February’s Hero is Sam Berns who died last month on Jan. 10.

Lizzie Velasquez has torn the door off of Olympus, shamed the lazy, narcissistic, false gods in there resting on their laurels and reclaimed her rightful place in the halls of divinity, goddess that she is and always was. Such courage and strength is sacred and awe-inspiring and takes my breath away. That is why I do what I do. That is why I worship heroes.
